Guard Dog Security is obviously about 'guard dogs', and each of ours is professionally trained from a puppy to accredited international police standards. The fine detail behind our guard dog training program is a closely guarded professional secret, but that wont prevent us from giving readers a glimpse into this amazing success story.

A genuine guard dog (or more correctly 'police dog') begins with breeding, so if you've not already looked at our Pedigree Breeding link, go there first and come back here to read on.

And spare a thought next time you see a guard dog pounding the beat with his handler - many so called guard dogs have had no professional training, and oftentimes are reared in deprivation and stress, so as to bring out the worst of canine aggression. Their lunging and snarling is based upon induced savageness, and has nothing at all to do with the affection based professionally managed training of a thoroughbred guard dog.

A Guard Dog guard dog (!) begins basic training as a puppy at about 12 - 14 weeks of age, which initially consists of lengthy bonding and socialisation exercises. Cruelty or deprivation has no place in our dog training program - our puppies and dogs receive the best of food, housing, and medical care, along with a consistent regime of organised activities involving affection and mutual respect. When you next see a Guard Dog 'guard dog' at work, you will know that it has passed through and graduated from a 12 month (??) intensive program, and is qualified to stand guard with its handler at a clients premises.

Our dogs will snarl and growl at persons who approach them too closely, because they are trained to guard, but a quiet word from their handler brings them to heel and silence. So, how did Guard Dog Security become the largest guard dog training organisation in the Southern Hemisphere, and why is it that bodies such as the Royal Australian Air Force and various Australian police forces and similar, look to our experts for guidance and in their own dog acquisition and dog training programs? And why will our dogs put themselves between you and mortal danger without fear of the risk to themselves? Read on ....

Points to discuss:

Working with a handler - Overview of tasks that GDSS can perform - Pounding the beat and general obedience - Searching of premises - Stopping an assailant - Capture of fleeing offender - Riot control - At watch over detained offender - On leash capability - Off leash tasks - Degree of protection given by the dog to its handler - Mutual respect and affection - Multiple handler dogs - Single handler dogs - Obstacle courses - Confidence should not be mistaken for viciousness - Assertiveness is not an indicator of being 'savage' - Obedience to commands - Graduation from training program - Going to work - Ongoing refresher training - Why only male dogs - other items of interest.
