Timbershepherds have been developed by crossbreeding high quality German Shepherds with the North American Grey Timber Wolf. This has been a painstaking process spanning 20 years, with many generations of scientifically controlled breeding. Originally bred in the United States of America and now being bred in Australia, the Timbershepherd should not be confused with generic wolf-dog-crosses. Rather, the Timbershepherd has been refined to produce a dog that has the best characteristics of both breeds - the German Shepherd and the Wolf. The Timbershepherd is unique in many ways; it looks like a large German Shepherd and has a very commanding appearance. If properly treated and brought up correctly from a puppy, it will excel in affection and confidence. The male ranges in size from 40 - 50kgs, and the female from 35-40kgs. Males stand 26 to 31 inches at the shoulder, and females from 24 to 28 inches. Their medium to short coat is adaptable to most climates and seasons, and their senses are far more acute than those of the domestic breed of dogs. I properly socialised, these animals are both gently and protective in attitude. They have amazing intelligence and stamina, and their size is generally larger than most German Shepherds. Another advantage they have over German Shepherds is that of life expectancy, usually living to approximately 15 years, as compared to the German Shepherd which live to 9 or 10 years, without almost no hip displasia . Some people are alarmed at the thought of crossing a wolf with a dog, however with the correct breeding this is not a problem. In addition to having an even and controlled temperament, Timbershepherds are more aware of their surroundings and more aware of their masters' needs than most conventional dogs When properly socialised, they are gentle and protective of their master as well as their family. The Timbershepherd bonds very well with women and family members, thereby making them excellent family friends and pets. |
